BestBuy's APIs: Rich User Experience

The new generation of Rich User Experience is that the rich internet application are multifunctional activities which provide online services to online business users. The online services can be between two electronic gadgets by using World Wide Web (WWW). The aim of this is to enable clients to retrieve particular information that has been designed by the third party of the websites such as Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). APIs allow software and/or hardware to be enabled to communicate over the internet securely.

Nowadays, most of the online companies if not all collaborate with each other or partners to complete clients’ demands for flexible arrangements. By exposing a set of APIs, companies can improve their business expeditiously. One of those amazing online marketplaces who supported by APIs and connected to other brands is Best Buy.

Best Buy is the largest consumer electronics retailer in the world. More than 7 in 10 of United States nation live within 15 minutes of a Best Buy store, and customers visit the websites and stores more than 1.5 billion times each year.

Some of APIs applications that Best Buy involves in:

   - Buying option APIs
   - Products APIs
   - Reviews APIs
   - Stores APIs
   - Categories APIs
   - Recommendations APIs
   - Smart Lists APIs
   - Commerce APIs (Invite only)

According to O'Reilly's concepts, APIs providers are entering a period of user interface improvement, which means that the web developers are able to build web applications as rich as local PC-based applications.

Usability and Simplicity

Best Buy provides some interesting innovations in its developer page, for instance, the content is accessible from anywhere regardless your location, country and time. Also, user interfaces have been created online with APIs which create a higher level of usability. This is quite similar to Google Doc App which enables more than one user to access and edit from the other end interface if they share the key.

So, the most important question just come in my mind is what is the next generation of technology that can take API’s place in the future? Who knows!

Thank you for taking to red this. Please leave a comment.

  1. Hey Younis,
Good to see an another wonderful blog from you. I couldn't imagine the plight of developers if APIs are not invented. The provision of APIs are a boon. As the Best Buy API offers re-usability and simple to use. As you said none knows what future holds, but one for sure APIs are here to stay

    Thanks,
    Alik

    1. Thanks Abdul for leaving a comment and refreshing my mind to re-think about it.
Yes, we do not know exactly what technology does the future keep for us, however, we expect that there are always theories and experiments to declare something has to be done, improved/upgraded and /or replaced.

  2. Hi Younis,

I really appreciate your blog posts because they are very educational, easy to follow, and you always provide us with very interesting examples. You are also creating some Rich User Experience for us.

The BestBuy API has shown us once again how important collecting data for improvement is. Like in life – as we go older, collect more information, more data – more knowledge, we become smarter. While we are young, we are often referred to as being “stupid”. Young people are not stupid but are simply lacking data, knowledge, and personal experience. The improvement of applications and platforms is just an easier task than trying to teach to the children the wisdom of the grey. So, collecting data and using it to improve possibilities of the platform is simply an amazing thing, especially when we also count how many feedbacks and information we can actually gain via Internet. It’s no wonder that the first sentence on the BestBuy website on the page where API’s are promoted is “Data is power”. (https://developer.bestbuy.com/apis)

Amazed as I am with every piece of information about the Web 2.0 platform improvements and information I can find on blog like this one, the question you put on the end of this post has really made me wonder. I share your curiosity about what the next generation will bring. Although you and I can’t imagine that, we can only assume that Rich User Experience will be improved almost like in some Sci-Fi move. Don’t you agree?

The next question is – when that time comes, will you and I still be alive? Until that era arrives, I wish to learn about some new patterns and improvement concerning web platform 2.0 and really hope you will provide us with some more quality blog posts. I will continue reading them so I can make myself richer with knowledge.

    1. Thank you Abdulaziz,

Glad to hear that my blog is easy to follow and it provided you interesting examples. That's right. I agree with you that we have been collecting information to add onto our knowledge. This means there's nothing to stop at and after we could understand the Rich User Experience pattern, I would say a big YES FROM TODAY WE CAN DO IT.

      Cheers

  3. Hey Younis,
Being a primarily Australian based consumer I have never really come into contact with BestBuy. Was a great read and really opened my eyes to how much of an effect their API can have within the consumer marketplace. Will be interesting to see how many other sellers adapt to this newer style of technology.

    1. Hi Matt,

First of all, your comment is really appreciated and I agree with what you said. In my opinion, I think BestBuy's platform may be similar to or better than eBay and Amazon's APIs in the coming years. We are not sure but technology is always in scale to improve something that we need.

      Thanks mate,
